Lake Boga - River Bollards

Congratulations Pat & Allen - 50 years of marriage.

March 29 - 30 Lake Boga - Lake Benanee
Friday we had an easy drive from Lake Boga to Swan Hill then on to Robinvale/Euston. We are free camping on Lake Benanee. It is a huge lake but not sure of the depth. Was used by the old drovers taking cattle from Queensland down to Victoria/SA especially when the Murray was in flood.  There was once a fence around the whole lake.
This morning I awoke about 6.30 and could not believe the sky! It was a beautiful sunrise. The Lake was pink towards the west yet golden to the east. Had a lovely 15mins in the Golden Light. Today is also Pat & Allan's 50th Wedding Anniversary so we are having a special nibbles time this evening. Drove into Robinvale this morning and was it busy!!!! Took 20 mins for the coffee to arrived and we were lined up in the supermarket and at the petrol station. Quite overcast again after a beautiful day yesterday.

Wednesday 27th March Eco Boat Tour Barmah

Today Jo & I booked on the Kingfisher Eco Tour of Bamah Lake and the Murray River .Was hoping to get lots of bird shots but that wasn't the case. Lake Barmah was quite shallow so we only went a short distance on the lake before we headed upstream on the Murray. Apparently, the present course of the Murray is actually quite recent and there were two other courses before this one. Uplifts caused the changes. We noticed that the water was flowing quite swiftly and this is caused by the fact that the section of the Murray that we were in is actually going uphill so as we came back, we were really travelling - the water was going at 7 knots. Saw a number of Azure Kingfishers and a number of water birds.
This afternoon we decided to take the awning down really for an early departure in the morning. Just as well as we had a storm about 5PM. Jo was in the laundry so I was trying to get everything in our of the rain. Fortunately, we had an ensuite so just put everything in there. Rain cleared after 1/2 hour.

5 o'clock nibbles

Pat John Allan Jo Elsa

March 26 -Echuca - Barham

While Allan and Pat spent the day with Allan's family aboard the EmmyLou, Jo and I did a drive to Baham and then back to Gunbower National Park. The Bridge over the Murray at Baham was supposed to be an engineering feat but it was being refurbished - about time too. Was just about falling down!!! We Had lunch at Cohuna and then attempted to follow the trail around Gunbower Island. It was supposed to be a great birding site! Well!! Did we have trouble! the route was really poorly signposted and we lost the trail several times. It was dry and most uninviting and disappointing.
On our way home, we drove in to see  Torrumbarry Weir and Lock 26. The weir has been refurbished and is really well presented with an information station alongside.
Had dinner with Allan, Pat, John, Elsa as they are heading back to Melbourne tomorrow.

Port of Echuca

Monday 25 March - Echuca

Allan and Pat spent the day with Allan's sister Elsa and her husband John while Jo & I went exploring the port of Echuca. The Port Authority is doing a wonderful job at restoring the wharfs and work is in progress. We did the port tour which included the tour of the port and two historic hotels. One of which, had an underground bar and an escape tunnel for the times when the pub was raided.
Echuca is regarded as the the paddle-steamer capital of Australia.  We did a one hour trip on the PS EmmyLou which is the only wood-fired paddle-steamer in the world to offer over night cruises. There are a number of paddle boats offering cruises including the PS Pevensey built in 1911 and was the one used in the mini-series "All The Rivers Run". The House boats are obviously very popular as there were lots of them anchored along the shore line.
