2 October – Monument Valley – Moab
Left Monument Valley and drove north towards Moab. The country
changed from Plateaus to canyons or we followed mesas for long distance.
Arrived in Moab about 12.30, booked into the Super 8 Motel (great value), had
some lunch then headed out to the Arches National Park. This was once an inland
sea and now the park lies above a an underground salt bed. The erosion by wind
and water is responsible for the arches, spires, balanced rocks, sandstone
fins, and eroded monoliths. Unfortunately we only had a 5 hours to see it so we
had to pick out the most famous parts.
Our first stop was the North & South Windows. The window loop
was 1.6km. We passed places with names like Parade of Elephants, Garden of
Eden, Sheep Rock, Three Gossips, Balanced Rock.
Our next stop was Delicate Arch. Marg M walked up a steep gradient
to the Upper Delicate Arch Viewpoint, but we just walked to the Lower
Viewpoint. Marg M & I also did 2.6 km hike to the Landscape Arch.
