Friday 10 September Isle of Skye

Rained all night and we awoke to dark skies. My turn to drive. We set out about 9.00 and crossed to Skye via the bridge at Kyle of Lockalsh. The clouds were really heavy and it was raining fairly heavily so did not see much. We started to circumnavigate the island. Went from Broadford to Sigachan and then via the east coast. Each time we got out of our car, the wind was so strong that you could hardly stand up. The hills were very high and there were no trees so the water just flowed down the slope. Waterfalls were frequent. The clouds were really low so we did not see Old man of Storr because it was so enveloped in clouds but there were many people who were heading up the slopes. What amazes us are the people here who still do the hiking, bike riding etc regardless of the weather.

At Portree, we stopped for a coffee and did a walk around the town. Bought a few trinkets there. The road north was very hairy – one lane!! Lots of vehicles, steep inclines, bends and sheep!!!!!

We stopped at Uig for lunch and from there the roads improved and so did the weather. We actually got some quite sunny weather on the drive home. We planned to go to the whisky distillery at Talisker but we arrived at 5.15 PM and it closed at 5 PM. We then headed back to Kyle of Lockalsh and to Dornie but just after Lockalsh, we saw a lay by to we stopped and here was a submarine heading up the Loch. Couldn’t believe it!! Apparently there is a naval base close by.

When we got back to Dormie, we did a drive to a lookout above the Loch. Jo was driving. What a steep, winding, one lane road!!! Anyway we got good views of the Loch.

Tonight we decided that we should try the whisky that we missed. Bad move!!! Very peaty and neither of us liked it. We are becoming quite expert at discerning a good wee dram!! We have decided that we are going to give each whisky that we try a rating based on our ext
