Today we journeyed up the Connemara Coast. Although a wet and windy day, it was still enjoyable and the rain eased throughout the day.
Connemara is Irish for inlets of the sea – and there were many small bays and coves, some with hidden beaches. The drive was very interesting and Very different to what we have seen thus far. It was a scene of endless bogs, black lakes and stonewalls. The stonewalls bordered small areas of grass as well as bogs. It was an amazing site.
Driving again involved narrow roads, stonewalls, and wandering sheep. The roads are quite lumpy as they are built on the bogs. Jan was driver for the day and did well on the roads. We only got lost once and we thanked God for the English speaking shop keeper as all signs were in Gaelic.
We stopped for lunch at Clifden one of the larger towns on the coast line. Again a boat filled harbour, colourful terrace houses and of course a number of pubs. We suspect that during summer Clifden and surrounds swell with crowds as there were many hotels and B&Bs. On our way home we were treated to towering, rocky mountains. We were driving along the some of the 12 ‘Bens’ (Mountains).
Tonight we have treated ourselves to a show, Trad on the Prom, at the hotel we are staying in. Hopefully we will be treated to good Irish song and dance. Anyway it is a chance to dress up away from the jeans!!!
