Today we have experienced the extremes of Scottish weather!!! A gale blew across the North Sea towards the eastern coast of Scotland. The waters were dark and the seas huge. Each time I got out of the car to take a photo, I felt that I was going to be blown away – found difficulty holding my camera still to take a photo.
We called into a number of seaports and the ocean water was wild, breaking over the seawalls and even the lighthouses!!! All the way from Tairn to John o’ Groats, it was blustering but about 15 mins after we arrived here, light rain began to fall.
On the way north we called in to see Dunrobin Castle, an ancestral home of the Dukes of Sutherland. It was really opulent and worth a visit but wasn’t impressed with all the stags displayed “Shot by ??? on date”. It is right on the coast and has a beautiful formal garden.
Included in the price was a falconry display – hawk, owl and falcon were used for the demonstration. I was most impressed as the falconer we obviously so devoted to the birds and was very knowledgeable about them and their habits.
We arrived at John o’ Groats about4 PM intending to buy a tour of the Orkney island tomorrow. However, the ferry has not run for the last 2 days because of the winds and the turbulent seas so we have to wait until tomorrow to see if the tour will go ahead.
We are staying at the Sea View Hotel for the night and sitting in the bar drinking a few wee drams while I do the blog and we both do emails.
