23rd July Oodnadatta – Coward
Springs.
The track starts to get interesting as it
follows the Old Ghan Railway. There are numerous old ruins along the way.
Crossed the Plantation Sandhills and stopped at Algebuckina Creek where the old
bridge is still a feature. It is still the longest rail bridge in SA. Next stop
was the Warrina Ruins the on to William Creek Hotel for a late lunch. The food
at the Hotel is really good.
Leaving William Creek we drove over the
Irrapatana Sandhills which run for miles. They are quite beautiful and covered
with poached egg daisies.
We stopped at Coward Springs for the night.
22nd July Kulgera - Oodnadatta
Another cold night. Once we were up, we were
quickly underway. Headed to the SA border then down to Marla and the start of
the Oodnadatta Track. Had lunch there then drove the 200km to Oodnadatta. Have never seen so many Wedge-tailed
eagles. They were together in groups of six or more. Tried taking photo but as
soon as I stepped out of the car, they flew.
The road was ordinary but not too bad.
Arrived in Oodnadatta in the early afternoon. It was Sunday so there was not
much activity. We had dinner at the Pink Roadhouse which is supposed to have
the best hamburgers but last night they were far from good.
