Sunday 8th July
Up at 4:45 AM after about 2 hours sleep. Have an infected toe-nail and it throbbed all night. Picked up at 5:30 and taken to the airport where we (5 people) boarded a little plane – very squeesy. I got the seat next to the pilot so that was good. We flew to Purnululu National Park via Lake Argyle. To see it from the air, enables you to understand the magnitude of the project. It is as big 23 Sydney Harbours and during the wet season can reach 40 odd Sydney Harbours. It was spectacular to see the Bungles in the early morning light and I was so thrilled to see them from the air. The plane landed to let me off as the other passengers were just doing the flight. The guide, Lisa, from APT met me and took me to the Wilderness Lodge for breakfast before we headed to the southern Bungles. They are mainly sandstone while the northern Bungles are mainly conglomerate. We walked to Piccaninny Creek and then to Cathedral Gorge and then the Domes walk. It was magical. Lisa then took me an hour’s drive to the northern Bungles where we had lunch and then walked up the rocky creek bed to the entrance of Echidna Chasm. It was amazing and was really narrow in some places. It was so narrow in the roof that some huge boulders had fallen and were wedged in the space. Lisa was surprised and pleased that I was able to do the rocks, climb the steps, and climb over the rocks.
Plane came back at 3.30 collected me and we returned to Kununurra via the Argyle Diamond Mine. The pilot also took us across the northern Bungles and we could see Echidna Chasm from the air. Arrived back in the Kununurra about 5PM. Fantastic Day.
Monday 9th July Kununurra – Victoria River
Left early as we had to lose 11/2 hours as we entered the Northern Territory. An uneventful day as we were on the Great Northern Highway – bitumen!!!! No bone shaking corrugations!
Stopped at the Victoria River Roadhouse caravan park for the night. Stopped early and have had a relaxing time with nibbles and drinks.
