Friday 18 September Donegal - Sligo

We started the day with a blue sky and sunshine. Our first drive was out to the coastline around Donegal. The woman at our B&B gave us some very good instructions on how to get to our destination. Here started our first lesson – check the map, is it in Gaelic or English! We spent a few moments of panic looking for Cill Chartha when we realized it was Kilcar!!!

At Donegal Bay we were treated to wonderful sea cliffs, plunging some 600 metres into the seas. The beauty of the rugged cliffs, with sheep perched precariously on the steep slopes made our drive up a very narrow road worthwhile. These cliffs at Slieve League are the highest in Europe. The Irish had built signal towers along the coastline to warn them of Napolean’s warships. They actually captured one of the ships from Napoleon’s fleet.

From here we drove through a beautiful Glen, Glencolumbkille back to Donegal and through to Belleek. As many know a famous pottery( Belleek china) is located here – Jo was in heaven and her credit card was not damaged too much!

We then drove around Lower Loch Erne and a drive into the Forest Park again treated us to a wonderful view of the Loch and valley below. From here we made our way into Sligo for the night. Just before Sligo we drove through the most beautiful of Glen’s. The green valley and rugged mountains shaped by glaciers many years ago made it one of the prettiest Glen’s we have driven through.
