This morning we headed up the A2 to Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. We were really lucky because the rain clouds held off until we had walked the mile to the island and return. There were 150 steps down to the bridge and then back up. Jo’s hip would not allow her to do the steps so I continued on and did the bridge. The wind was still fairly strong and it was a tad frightening in the middle of the bridge. Then when I got across to the island a squall nearly blew me off the island!!! The squall produced another great rainbow. We have seen soooo many since we landed in Ireland so we think we should be able to find the gold at the end!
From there we visited the Giant’s Causeway. Big cliffs to climb and even more steps so we decided to catch the bus up and down. I thought the causeway would be much bigger than it was. The rock formations were certainly interesting and I climbed up to the top of the rocks. There are a number of different formations in the three bays – including the Giant’s Boot, The Organ, the Amphitheatre and the Chimneys. I walked to The Organ and Jo walked part of the way as it was quite steep.
This afternoon we drove to Londonderry, or Derry. Actually managed to find our way through to the city, found a car park and then walked the Walls of Derry. Took us about ¾ hour and the rain squalls came in again. Saw Bogtown, where the riots were. Most of the houses have been replaced and a group of artists have painted large murals on a number of the buildings facing the wall. Had a wander in the city and then drove on to Donegal.
