Today was cloudy but we made the decision to drive to Monjinup Lake which is a flora and bird park. The Lake is surrounded by tea trees and is very swampy. There is a boardwalk to take you to the lake. Banksia trees, especially the “Propeller Banksia” were everywhere and the honeyeaters were having a marvelous time pollinating the flowers.
We returned to Esperence and walked the 850m Tanker Jetty. Saw a dolphin swimming past but the seals and sea lions were on holidays!!!
Back to JJ’s (Our cottage) for lunch. After lunch, we drove east along the coast to the Duke of Orleans Bay. Our host, Jenny, told us that the Wharton Beaches there are some of the whitest in the area. When we arrived, the sun came out for a short while and we were able to walk to the beach. Jenny was right. Little Wharton Beach and Wharton Beach were just spectacular – crystal clear water and white beaches for as far as the eye could see.
We then drove back to Cape Le Grand National Park but the rain clouds began to form. As we drove though the park, there were acres of Propeller and Coastal Banksia trees. Parts were what I would describe as heath-land and were interspersed with some tea trees that were bent over from the constant winds. We had breaks in the weather that enabled us to walk to the beaches and then as we drove towards Cape Le Grand, there was the most beautiful complete rainbow that formed over the granite outcrops. The beaches were visited were beautiful. Esperance boasts of over 16 amazing beaches. By the time we arrived back in Esperance, it was 5.30 and raining.
Tomorrow we begin our journey home.
