Walpole – Thursday 20th October.

The motel owner suggested that we do the WOW Wilderness Eco Cruise so first up today we booked on the cruise. It was through Walpole and Nornalup Inlets. Gary and his father ran the cruise. Gary was an absolute entertainer and regaled stories of the early years of Walpole. Seems his family has been here since early 1850’s and he had a range of stories about his family and the other local identities. He is really involved in conservation and has been responsible for the bath and spray system that is used to try to stop “dieback”.
Everyone we have spoken to in Walpole emphasizes the need to be vigilant re snakes. Apparently there have been 80 odd snakes bites in the last ten years.
Went out to Thurlby Herb Farm after the cruise. Managed to get some wren photos and then as we were about to leave a red capped robin sat on the fence.
Next stop was the Giant Tingle Tree. The Tingle trees are HUGE!!!! Many of them have been burnt out by bush fires and have huge cavities in the base that are all blackened by the fires but they continue to grow.
After the walk to the Giant Tingle Tree we went to the Valley of the Giants where there is a tree top walk. According to Gary, it was the first built in Australia and the other states have copied it. After the tree top walk that takes you up to 40 metres, we did a walk through the forest floor below.
Time is now 5PM so off we went to see Peaceful Bay which was certainly aptly named. Beautiful spot.
After Peaceful Day, we drove along Ficifolia Road which is the sole habitat of the red flowering Gum Trees (Corymbia ficifolia) but the flowers are not at their peak until January. We arrived at Conspicuous Cliff Beach in time for sunset. It is described as a photographer’s delight and it was certainly that. Regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches on the south coast. What a busy day!!! Time for dinner, wine and bed!!!
