Pemberton – 18th October 2011

Well! The wearing of shorts did not last long! One day! Had to change back into jeans yesterday and today we woke to rain so on with the jeans again! Jo said that it had rained most of the night not that I heard it. The showers continued through-out the day.
Our first venture was the Pemberton Train ride. It followed the tracks laid for the early logging trains bringing the karri logs back to the Pemberton mill. The train tracks wound along the Lefroy Brook. We crossed over four trestle bridges until we arrived at the Warren River Bridge. En-route, the train passed through karri forest where the trees brushed the sides of the train as it passed. We stopped at the Cascades – which were flowing again. Apparently with the dry they experienced last year the brook had all but dried up.
After lunch, as it was still raining, we drove to the Gloucester National Park, saw the Gloucester Tree then went on a walk. We did not check the colour code for the walk and were going for a while when we noticed the path was not heading back so we decided to return along the same track. Just as well!!! We were on the 20km track.
We then drove to the Beedelup National Park and walked to the falls. Braved a few showers before doing the drive on the “Heartbreak Trail” through the Warren National Park. It was a dirt road and quite slippery. The trees on this drive were just beautiful - so big and tall. The colour of their bark changes with the age of the tree. The rain and the filtered sun-light made it so much more enchanting.
Back at the caravan park, I decided to feed the Western Ringneck Parrots. Well!!! They just swarmed. They were on our shoulders, heads, hands trying to get to the seed. They ate out of our hands but were so gentle.
