Our travels today took us northwest to follow the Murray to Morgan where it makes a 90 degree turn to head south towards Lake Alexandrina. We stopped at the Overlander Hotel. It was a stopping off place for the drovers droving stock to Adelaide. It was early so it was not open.
Loved the town of Morgan. At the height of the river trade, from 1880 -1910, it was the busiest inland port in Australia. The are still many of the original buildings and they are working to preserve more. The town is high above the Murray. We crossed over on barge and then headed south. We did intend staying at Swan Reach but it was early so we decided to drive on to Murray Bridge. After Murray Bridge, we stopped at Big Bend for a photo opportunity.
From Swan Reach down the Murray starts to spread into the Anna Branch of the Murray and the speed of the river reduces as it is only .9m above sea level. Swan Reach is where Lock 1 is built and below the there were hundreds of pelicans swimming and fishing. Couldn't get really close as they are working on the lock and it was fenced off.
We are staying in a caravan park near the Murray at Murray Bridge so Allan & I worked down to the edge tonight to see the sunset. There were a number of pelicans flying overhead and well as a couple of kites and lots of ducks.
