April 7-8 Wellington –
Coorong
Using Wellington as a
base, we have done a couple of day trips around this area. Went to Tailem Bend
and then the ferry back home. We
drove as close as we could to the spot where the Murray flows into Lake Alexandrina.
Allan reckons that that was the end of the Murray. Took the photo again. Went
to the Wellington Pub for dinner. It is the oldest country pub in SA. The food
was really good. Allan & I had the Coorong Mullet as we have been told that
it is not like other mullet. It melted in your mouth and I loved it even though
I don’t usually choose fish.
Today we ventured
further afield and down to the Coorong. Across the ferry at Wellington then
headed down the Princess Highway to Meningie and on to Policeman’s Point where
the pelican breeding grounds are. However, after a walk to the hide, we did not
see one pelican!!! Luckily we saw a whole group close to the shore at Meningie.
We then drove to Salt
Creek. This drive was along the Coorong.
You could see the sand dunes of Younghusband Peninsula across the Coorong. It appears to me
that the water level of the Coorong is getting lower as we saw many salt pans.
Once we had completed the loop drive we drove back to Meningie and then took
the road around Lake Albert (It flows into Lake Alexandria). This was mainly
farmland esp Black Angus Beef. We crossed on the ferry at the confluence of
Lake Albert and Lake Alexandrina and high on the hill to the left was a
lighthouse. Arrived back at
Wellington, another visit to the old Wellington Pub for dinner followed by a
few Ballast Stone ports!!!
