Cape Leeuwin – Margaret River – Leeuwin/Naturaliste National Park 16th October 2011

Today we drove from Dunsborough to Augusta passing through Margaret River. Our first stop was 9 km from Augusta, the historic Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. It is the tallest on mainland and sits on the tip of a peninsula where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. 23 ships are recorded as being wrecked on this coast but only 1 since the lighthouse was erected.
Jo minded the bags while I climbed the 176 steps to the top of the lighthouse. The view was breathtaking. You could see the angle where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. The turquoise waters and white beaches take your breath away. It is certainly a dangerous coast as you can see the reefs and rocks far out to sea.
We then drove back to Dunsborough via Caves Road. We made the effort to drive into each of the coastal highlights – Cape Hamelin, Cosy Corner, Hamelin Bay, Cape Freycinet. On the way, we drove through a karri forest. We were both awestruck as the trees were so tall and so thick.
It was now time for Jo to do some wine tasting. We went to Mad Fish, Vasse Felix and Evans & Tate. Bought a few bottles. Checked with Pam to see what others we should visit but ended up at the Margaret River Chocolate Factory and ice-creamery. Jo reckons I am a bad influence on her as she does not usually eat chocolate or ice-creams!!!
