Thought it was summer at last but that was short lived. The further north we came, the more the storm clouds built up and the more the wind blew. Am presently lying on my bed in the Backpackers looking out the door onto the Indian Ocean which is just 30m away. The only prob is that it is so cold and windy.
On our way here we called into Hamlyn Pool to see the stromatolites – oldest living organisms on the planet. There is now a boardwalk that extends over them and enables visitors to see them without causing any harm. Since they grow at the rate of 0.3mm a year, this is important. To look at them, you would think you are looking at a rock – not a living organism.
Another feature of this area is Shell Beach – a 120 km stretch of white beach that is 10 m deep in shell. It is so white. When I was here 25 years ago, many of the buildings in Denham were made of shell blocks but that is not happening any more.
