Dunsborough – Pemberton 17th October 2011
Our first stop today to the ARB shop in Busselton as the fridge had ceased to work in the car. Fortunately it was only a fuse so we were soon under way again heading to Nannup. There were lots of wildflowers alongside the road so we found an area that had had a recent fire and stopped there. Found a purple enamel orchid.
Had lunch along side the river at Bridgeton. The bridge across the river was constructed of jarrah timber. The supports are huge. At Manjimup, we visited the “The King Jarrah” tree. It is 47 m in height, with diameter 2.69m and was at least 500 years. We also did a walk through the jarrah forest.
A highlight today was a visit to a Truffels & Winery. They use 4 dogs to find the truffels. They are four different breeds. Truffle time is July- August and the café was not open so we didn’t have the opportunity to taste any.
Further south, we went in to see the diamond tree. It was one of the original trees that the forestry people used to climb to check on bushfires. You can climb to the top and the people we met who had just come down said that it was a fantastic view. However, it was tooooo high for us and the safety net was a bit thin!!!! This time it was in a karri forest so we did another walk through that. Were a few wildflowers and some of them were named so that was a bonus.
Arrived in Pemberton late in the afternoon and have a cottage in the caravan park. It is surrounded by trees and the greenies are here in numbers.
