Monkey Mia 4 October 2011

Off to Monkey Mia today to see the dolphins being fed and to catch a tour out to see the dugongs. Woke up today to a clear sky and by the time we arrived the wind had dropped. What a beautiful day! Last time I was in Monkey Mia, you could go into the water and feed the dolphins. This is not the case today. The Dolphins (only 7) came in about 9.30 AM. The feeding is strictly controlled as research has shown that if the dolphins rely on man to be fed, then the females do not teach their offspring to feed. Good for humans but not for the dolphins.
We booked on the “Aristocat 2” for the trip. Saw a few dolphins and then went to the sea-grass beds where we saw a female dugong with her baby. They have to come up every 5 mins or so for air so we were able to watch them.
We then visited the “The Blue Lagoon Black Pearl Farm” where we were welcomed by Jamie from “The Farmer Wants a Wife”. Apparently there are only 2 independent pearl farms now and Shark Bay is one of the two that produce black pearls. Some of the younger members of the tour did
the boom netting on the way home but we gave that a miss. Bit cool!!
In the afternoon we visited the “Ocean Park Aquarium”. What a beautiful spot! We sat on the balcony of the Aquarium and looked out across the aqua blue sea towards Dirk Hartog Island where we could see huge white sand cliffs. Close in towards the shore in the shallow water, there must have been thirty or more Nervous Sharks swimming up and down. We both kept saying, “Wonder what other people are doing today?”
