Jo & I did a long drive starting in Corryong then following the Alpine Way to Thredbo. It was a very demanding drive as it was really steep and curving road. It is no wonder that the road is not suitable for vehicles towing vans or trailers. It is also closed during the winter.
Stopped at Tom Groggin for a look. It is a really pretty spot and right on the Upper Murray. Saw lots of roos. Thredbo has really changed since I was last there in the eighties!!! Very up-market with lots of ski resorts.
We had lunch in Jindabyne then drove on to Berridale along the Snowy Mts Highway which was a good highway compared with the Alpine Way.We did leave ourselves enough time to drive to Charlotte Pass to see Mt Kosciuszko up close and personal. At Adaminaby we went north towards Kiandra but then turned onto the Khankoban- Cabramurra Road to complete the circuit back to Corryong.
After Cabramurra we saw miles and miles of dead forest. As far as the eye can see, in the paddocks and on the ridges extending to the horizon, are dead trees. However, it isn't fire that has killed these tens of thousands of gum trees as we first thought but the culprit for this seemingly wanton destruction is a critter no bigger than your little fingernail – it's the eucalyptus (or gum tree) weevil.
After crossing over the Tumut Pond Dam, (water levels in all the dams seemed to be very low), we continued along the road and finally arrived back to Corryong about 6.00PM.
