Day 7 Sept 8 Jackson Hole – Colter Bay
Rose early to drive a place that was supposed
to have moose but we went the wrong direction!!! Back to the excitement of
Jackson Hole having a fun run. It was fun as they had all the stalls set up
along the road – lots of local produce. We bought some of the local fruit that
was just as juicy.
After brekkie, we began our journey through
the Grand Tetons ( named by a Frenchman and means big breasts).
The mountains are so spectacular and seem to
rise vertically from the plains. A guy just recently climbed to the top (about
12 000 feet) and back down in just over two hours! Take me a year!
We visited all the major attractions: Moose
Entrance, Jenny Lake (boat trip closed for the season), Oxbow Bend and Jackson
Lake Lodge. From there, we went on the Snake River Float Boat to float down the
river for 10 miles. It was a rubber duckie type boat and the leader, handsome
young man, stood in the middle and had two oars to row us out into the current
and to keep us on track. What a marvelous thing to do. We saw our first bald
eagle when we were only a little way down the river. Then we actually witnessed
a bald eagle attacking an osprey that had a fish. This is a sight you might not
often see. Saw several other bald eagles en-route as well as some beavers
swimming near the bank. Did not arrive at our destination until about sunset
and then the float company had to drive us back to the start. We then had a 5
mile drive to our accommodation at Colter Bay. It was a lovely log cabin with
two bedrooms and four beds.
