Monday 24 September Williams – Grand Canyon
via Sedona
Found Williams to be a very interesting town.
It was the last town on the old Route 66 to be bypassed by the new Route I-40
in 1984. We had a very interesting hour or so strolling down the street and
looking at the old signs and shops. The train goes to Grand Canyon from here as
well.
We decided to drive the circular route to
Sedona before heading to the Grand Canyon.
The road to Sedona wound down from the top of
the bottom then through Oak Canyon. Again lots of Z bends. The scenery was
spectacular but no pull off to take
a photo. As we came close to Sedona, the red cliffs that it is famous
for emerged. They have a “WOW” factor. Sedona is a real tourist mecca and there
were people everywhere. Had lunch is a Mexican restaurant and the food was some
of the best I have eaten in the USA.
After lunch we headed off on a circular route
back towards Williams and then on to the South Rim of Grand Canyon arriving at
the Visitor’s Centre about 3.30PM.
We went straight to Mather Point. WOW!!! I
had forgotten just how vast and indescribable the canyon really is. It is breathtaking.
We then caught a shuttle bus (Cars are not allowed in some places and are only
accessible by shuttle bus) towards Yaki Point stopping over first at Yavapai
Point. Our aim was to be there for the sunset. Took the tripod but it was so
windy there was no way I could set it up.
The sunset was really disappointing as the cloud cover was there.
Finally got to our lodging about 8PM. Off to
Plaza Banita for dinner and a late repose.
