Wednesday 26th September – Grand
Canyon - Zion National Park
Another big drive. We did not arrive in Zion
unit 5.30 PM but we also lost an hour in the change of time zones. When we left
the Grand Canyon and headed towards Cameron, we were travelling through Navajo
Native Title land. The canyon that continued on our left was formed by the
Little Colorado River. The country changed and it reminded me so much of the
country around Coober Pedy and the Painted Desert in SA.
We then crossed the Little Colorado River
over one bridge and the original bridge was alongside and it has been turned
into a walking bridge as it was not strong enough to support modern traffic.
We then arrived at the Vermillion Cliffs
which were on our right hand side and the shades of colour in them were very
similar to Echo Cliffs that we had seen in the morning.
Stopped at the cliff dwellers, people made
homes in the holes in the rock and then added rooms to them. Passed through
Fredonia then Jacob Lake, crossed the border into Utah passed through Kanab
then into Zion National Park.
Zion is another mind-blowing place. Huge
cliffs that are white and red. When we stopped at one spot, we saw a mountain
sheep. We have been looking for one for ages. We then passed through a 1.1 mile
tunnel through the mountain. The road down to Springdale was another very steep
road with lots of switch-backs.
Tonight we met a lovely couple who are
staying at the Bumbleberry Inn and I talked to them for ages while we waited
for the mood to rise over the mountain.
