Day 4 Sept 5 Yosemite
UP at 5 AM to catch the
tour to Yosemite. We had to travel 600 km return trip so it was a long day.
Arrived back about 8.30 PM. After
entering Yosemite, described by John Muir as “by far the grandest of all the
special temples of Nature I was ever permitted to enter”, our first stop was
the Sequoia Groves. These trees are giants that can live for over two thousand
years. Yosemite symbol is the cones and foliage of the sequoia tree. We had a
1.5 miles hike downhill to the grove and guess what? We had to climb the same
distance up. It was steep but we made it!!
We stopped at a look out
and saw Half Dome and the valley then we descended to the valley floor. Stopped
at the Bridal Falls which still have a little water flowing over but the
Yosemite Falls have dried up. Saw El Capitan, a sheer cliff that is favoured by
rock climbers. There were several on the face and they were as tiny as ants. We
stopped at Yosemite Lodge and went for a walk. Some of the folks walked to the
beach by the river and they saw deer but we did a different walk – no deer, no
bears!!
Stopped the Oakland side
of the Bay Bridge on the way home to photograph the San Francisco Skyline. The
Bay Bridge will be replaced in September next year by a brand new bridge which
is nearing completion.
