Sept 23 Las Vegas – Williams
Left Las Vegas and headed to Boulder and the Hoover Dam. Cost us $7 to park at the
dam. The dam is a National Monument and is one of America’s Seven Modern
Engineering Wonders. Construction began in 1931 and the last concrete was
poured in 1935. It was completed 2 years ahead of schedule and well under
budget. It was built under some of the harshest working conditions. It was
opened by President Franklin D Roosevelt on September 30, 1935.
Lake Mead is the result of the damming of the
river. It has a maximum depth of 151.4 metres but the exposed rocks show how
low the dam is at the present. A chap standing near me said that it had not
been to the height of water mark for 15 years.
We walked over the dam wall and had a good
look around. They have constructed a new traffic bridge over the canyon that
looks spectacular and we knew that you could walk to it but do you think we
could find a place to park??? Went back to Boulder City and finally found the
park. We had passed it twice but not realized that it was the car park to the
bridge entrance!!! Saw the dam wall! Massive! How those men worked under the
conditions they did amazes me.
Drove towards Kingman in Arizona but by now
it was 2PM so we found this place to stop. It was called “Last Stop”. It is the
home of the World Famous Burger – we all had one and they were very good – 8oz
patty on it with smoked hickory bacon. Buttttt – There is more! It advertises
Bullets and Burgers – The Ultimate Outdoor Machine Gun Experience. You can have
50 rounds for $50 with eg a Gloc
18 or 50 rounds for $79 with a machine gun or 10 rounds for $100 with a
Barret.50cal. The place had movie star and local history people painted murals.
It was such a hoot.
