Perth - Lancelin 24th September 2011

On Saturday morning, we left the hospitality of Amanda & Greg’s house and headed north 130 km to Lancelin to stay with Peta (Jo’s niece) and Craig (her partner). We arrived here about 11.30. Craig & Peta took us on an orientation tour of this beachside hamlet. What a cracker of a place! At one end of the beach you have the windsurfers and at the northern end are huge areas of sand dunes where the bikes, dune buggies, trikes and cars test their skill on the dunes.
I could not get over the sand. It is so white white!!! Craig said it sits on a bed of limestone so I guess it is the result of weathering.
After lunch Craig launched his jet ski and ferried us to Lancelin Island. It is a bird sanctuary. Lots of Sooty Terns, Caspian Terns and some Oystercatchers. It is a landing spot for migratory birds. As we climbed the boardwalk, we spotted an Osprey perched on the side of the cliff. I crept closer and closer and managed to get quite close and after dozens of photographs it decided it had had enough and took off! Well! It actually just dropped straight off the cliff and down towards the sea.
Craig took me out on the jet ski about a km off shore and past the reef to where they go board riding. Then we were riding waves. It was so exhilarating. He goes out with his friends and they use the ski to tow each other into the wave. We then went around the island and back to where we left Jo & Peta on the Island. We had to be ferried back to the mainland again. We then went to a friend’s house to have drinkies and nibbles and to watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean.
