Ceduna – Nullarbor
The drive to Nullarbor Roadhouse was through quite diverse countryside. We drove through farming land for the first part of the trip. This gave way to grazing land. Then for miles we crossed undulating hills covered with mallee eucalypts.
After crossing a rise, we saw the sand dunes of the Great Australian Bight. We then drove onto the treeless Nullarbor Plain. The change was remarkable!!!
About 20 km east of the Nullarbor Roadhouse, we turned onto a road that led to the Head of the Bight and part of Great Australian Bight Marine Park. Think it has been open for about 8 years. You pay an entrance fee – for those who are seniors like us, it was $10 and you could walk along the board walk to the Coast and along the top of the cliffs. From there you could observe the whales. There were a few there – mothers and calves. They rest up here before heading south. The colours of the cliffs and the ocean had a WOW factor.
As it was mid-day, we drove to the Nullarbor Roadhouse (we had booked in there for the night) for lunch and a rest before heading back later in the day when the light isn’t as harsh. There were still only a few whales in close. Same as this morning. They were not active. What was active was the flies, midges and sand-flies.!!!!! We were ready on the second visit and had our fly veils. After the cold weather we have had the temperature reached 33 degrees today.
