The journey from Kalgoorlie to Southern Cross was only 227km but it took us 31/2hours!!! Why? Well! We were on the Goldfields Wildflower Trail and we stopped frequently. “Stop! There is a species we don’t have! And each time we stopped there would be a number of wildflowers that we had not seen before. Jo kept saying, “We can’t be stopping for every flower!!!” then in the next breath, “Jan! Look at that pink one!! We don’t have that one. You need to take that one. We even climbed to the other side of the Kalgoorlie Water Pipe Line to get some photos!!! Again! The wild flowers continue to amaze us – the colours are amazing. The biggest problem is trying to identify the varieties we have taken pictures of.
After Southern Cross, the country changed completely and we were in the wheat belt. The Salmon Gums are still in evidence and they have been planted along side the road. At Merredin, we turned south and headed to Hyden and Wave Rock. We arrived about 5 PM, just in time to do the walk around the base of the rock and then up to the top to watch the sunset. Then we had to find our way back down!!! With my sense of direction, we did not do too well but Jo came to the rescue and we found the way back.
