Saturday – 17th September 2011 Cocklebiddy – Kalgoorlie

Left Cocklebiddy and headed west towards Caiguna where we had to change our watches again from Central Western Time to Western Australia time. West of Caiguna is the longest stretch of straight roadway in the world (approx 145km). (See Picture). Jo drove and I slept!!! After Balladonia Roadhouse, we stopped for a cuppa and changed drivers. You could have fooled me, but I reckon we continued on the straight road except that there were many hills to be crossed. At Norseman, we decided we would head to Kalgoorlie so rang ahead for accommodation. Guess what? Annual race day and everything was booked out but we eventually found a unit in a caravan park – very expensive and very basic!!! We hope to do one of the wildflower drives up to Laverton and Menzies. Lake Ballard where sculptor, Anthony Gormley, has created 51 figures which are placed around a seven square kilometer area of the salt lake is also a must before we head off towards Perth.
