Nullarbor – Cocklebiddy - 16th September

Nullarbor – Cocklebiddy

Left Nullarbor Road House after breakfast. Ordered bacon and eggs but the driver had dropped the carton with all the eggs so the result – NO Eggs on the menu!!!

There was a thick fog across the country-side. Today has been most interesting because of the variety of scenery. We drove into several of the drives to the cliffs along the Great Australian Bight. There were warnings everywhere about the fact that cliffs were dangerous and could collapse so we were pretty careful about how close to the edge we came. The cliffs were sheer and we could only reflect on the fact that this time last year we were looking at sheer cliffs in Ireland – Cliffs of Mohr and Kerry. We saw a few whales with their calves just beyond the breakers but again too far out for a good photo.

At Border Village we passed into Western Australia. Had to go through the Quarantine but we had eaten all our fruit and veggies before we arrived so we had nothing to declare.

As we came closer to Eucla, the cliffs changed from the sheer limestone cliffs to more rolling cliffs. By the time we got to Eucla, the white dunes became the dominant feature. We did not stay at Eucla as a whale had beached and died and was in the process of decomposing!!! Really want to photograph the white dunes in either the really morning or late afternoon light.

Our destination for the day was Cocklebiddy. Population 10!!! No internet! We had intended to go to the Bird Reserve near here but the road is very bad so may try on the way back. Cocklebiddy is one of the golf holes in the course across the Nullarbor – Eagle’s Nest! I went for a walk with a couple who were playing the hole. Actually forgot to bring my clubs so may try to pick up some second hand ones for the trip back. Went down to the bore outlet late this arvo and got some photos of an Australian Spotted Crake feeding in the run off.
