Arose early and did the 3.6km hike to Hippo’s Yawn and then out across the salt lakes and back to the cabin. Saw a couple of Ring-neck parrots feeding on the grasses. Back at the cabin, I collected my macro lens and tripod, then returned to the beginning of the trail to take some close-ups of the wildflowers. Thought I was reasonably observant but a lady showed me a native orchid that I had walked passed!! When I bought Jo out to show her, I still missed it and had to really search.
We then continued along the “Wave Rock Wildflower Trail” towards Karlgarin, Kondinin and on to Kulin. In each place, the wildflowers were everywhere but there were unique ones to each area. Unfortunately, the sky was becoming blacker and blacker with rain threatening.
Kulin and the other towns are located in heart of wheat-belt. When I was in this area in the mid ‘80’s salt in all the water catchment was really pronounced. I am pleased to see that each of the shires is tacking salinity as one of the priorities and we saw fields planted especially for this purpose.
At Kulin, we drove along the “Tin Horse Highway”. It was a community project and is really clever and witty. Then! The rains came and we were driving along wildflower trails at snails pace and I was trying to take photos out of the window with the rain blowing in!
On to Corrigin, Quairarading and York but we really had to give up searching for flowers by York as the rain was just teeming down. We made the decision that we would return on a day trip from Perth as it is only 100km.
