What a day!!! We experienced the full gambit of weather conditions in the Goldfields. Woke to a lovely morning and headed off to Coolgardie for their annual festival. We were there early so managed to look at the old buildings and walk the main street well before the 11AM parade.
We ordered an ice-cream and the couple told us that an intense storm front was coming through. Sooo !!! after the parade, we headed back to Kalgoorlie (Needed to rescue the clothes off the line). Well!! We could not believe the line up of cars heading to Coolgardie. The line must have extended for 5 Kms so we were most lucky to have gone early in the day.
We had lunch and heard some-one in the park calling out so went out to check what was happening. It was a DUST storm!!! A red dust wall was coming towards us. Jo experienced her first dust storm and I thought I had returned to Quilpie!!! The wind gusts were up to 100km an hour! It was followed by rain. It was quite frightening really. When we went out later in the afternoon, water was flowing in the gutters, trees were uprooted and branches were blown down everywhere, police were on duty on corners where the lights had failed and when trees had bought down power lines.
We went to Karlkurla Bushland Park and did a 5 km hike through the park. It was fantastic - A bit like the desert park in Port Augusta. The wildflowers are just beginning to blossom. As we walked through the park, we could see another storm front coming through. Luckily for us it was just a few spits where we were but by the time we arrived at the lookout, a magnificent complete rainbow formed over the sky in front of us.
