Broken Hill - Port Augusta

Broken Hill – Port Augusta

Left Broken Hill at 8.30 AM and crossed into South Australia 40 kms later. The road wound across the Mundi Mundi plains that were flat, treeless and covered with saltbush, We stopped at Manna Hill so that I could photograph the old railway station. The wildflowers there were thick and we found a few different ones. Had a cuppa before driving on to Peterborough where we visited the Old Railway Hotel for lunch. There are a number of historic old buildings in Peterborough.
Leaving Peterborough, we drove towards the Flinders Ranges. The distance blue/purple ranges looked spectacular against the foreground of green grass and masses of yellow bushes and farms of yellow canola plants. As we drove into Orroroo, the road was lined with masses of gazineas which are in fact, imported invasive weeds
As we crossed Horrocks Pass, there were sweeping views to Spencers Gulf and the Flinders Ranges. Crossing saltbush plains, we could see the power plant to the south. Arrived at Port Augusta to find all the accommodation full but managed to find a bed at Nuttbush Retreat about 40km out of town. It is a working property but has rooms and a caravan
